NFL fans are having a field day mocking Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance after a video surfaced of him making a cringeworthy interception during practice. The clip, shared by Bobby Belt of 105.3 The Fan on X/Twitter, shows Lance’s pass being easily picked off by Markquese Bell, eliciting a flood of hilarious reactions on social media.
Lance, who was acquired by the Cowboys via a trade with the San Francisco 49ers last year, is entering his second season in Dallas. However, he has yet to see any playing time behind starter Dak Prescott and backup Cooper Rush. The disastrous interception in practice has only added to the growing skepticism surrounding the young quarterback’s abilities.
As one fan put it, the play “almost looked like Trey Lance was throwing to [Bell] on purpose.” Another quipped, “Trey Lance is the new Nathan Peterman,” referring to the infamous Buffalo Bills quarterback known for his turnovers.
Trey Lance’s struggles continue in Dallas
The 49ers had high hopes for Lance when they traded up to select him with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. After a promising 2020 season at North Dakota State, the team envisioned him eventually replacing Jimmy Garoppolo as the starting QB. However, Lance’s tenure in San Francisco was plagued by injuries, as he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 of the 2022 season.
Meanwhile, Garoppolo’s replacement, Brock Purdy, has emerged as a surprise star, leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship game. As for Lance, he now finds himself firmly behind Prescott and Rush on the Cowboys’ depth chart, and the latest practice mishap has only fueled the narrative that he may not be cut out for the NFL.
It’s a far cry from the hype that surrounded Lance’s arrival in the league, but as one fan aptly put it: “Trey Lance is really making it hard to be a Trey Lance fan.” With the regular season just around the corner, the young quarterback will need to turn things around quickly if he wants to silence his critics and prove he belongs in the NFL.
