Japan and Costa Rica took to their mammoth opening games against Germany and Spain with differing amounts of vigour.
Japan put Ilkay Gundogan’s penalty behind them in the second half of their victory against Germany as Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano struck in quick succession to secure one of the biggest World Cup shocks ever.
Another victory here against Costa Rica would put them on the brink of qualification. The South Americans were thumped 7-0 by Spain and will want a much improved performance.

Another side looking to up their game will be Belgium, who squeezed past Canada in fortuitous fashion in their opener. The ageing Red Devils earned all three points against the run of play through Michy Batshuayi’s strike.
Their resolve will be tested by a Morocco side that showed plenty of steel in their goalless draw with Croatia, even if they struggled for cutting edge in attack.
A positive result for Morocco would put them in good stead to qualify and blow Group F wide open.

Two more sides looking for their first goals of the 2022 World Cup collide at the Khalifa International Stadium when Croatia face Canada.
Croatia reached the final in 2018 but spluttered in their opener against Morocco in a game of few chances, Their old heads will call on all their experience against Canada, who are led by the youthful exuberance of Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David.
Davies missed a penalty against Belgium. The North Americans were unlucky in that fixture but know another defeat here would see them knocked out.

Spain and Germany were initially pegged as the two favourites for Group E, though only one got started positively in their opener.
Spain were lethal in front of goal despite playing about a billion midfielders and could book their last 16 spot with victory over Germany if Costa Rica fail to beat Japan.
Germany, on the other hand, know they will be eliminated if Japan avoid defeat and they lose to Spain. The stakes are pretty high, and in a World Cup full of shocks so far, Sunday night could see a powerhouse nation knocked out.
