How is Colnago celebrating 70 years of bicycle history? With a fully Italian limited edition creation that blends classic material with modern construction methods, of course. The Steelnovo is a gorgeous addition to the Colnago steel lineage with seamlessly integrated 3D-printed lugs. Only 70 of these beauties will be offered, with a price to match…

Colnago’s history with steel dates back to the early days of the company’s founding in Cambiago, in 1954. Up until the late 90’s steel was a huge part of the brand, whether it was brazed or welded. Working hand in hand with Columbus to develop custom tube shapes, Colnago has continued that tradition here with Columbus tubing mated to 3D-printed steel lugs made by Additiva.

Those 3D printed components include the top and bottom head tube lugs, seat tube-top tube and seat stay lugs, rear dropouts, and custom components like the head tube logo printed in relief.

Thanks to the 3D printed droput, the Steelnovo features one of the sleekest UDH dropouts we’ve seen. While the Steelnovo does offer tire clearance for up to 700c x 35mm, it’s still a road bike, so the addition of UDH is an interesting one – especially when you consider the custom Campagnolo Super Record Wireless groupset included on the build. It’s highly unlikely that the owner of one of these limited edition builds is ever going to replace the drivetrain with something that needs UDH, or is even likely to ride it enough to need a replacement derailleur hanger, but as a design exercise, the dropouts are impressive.

Other modern standards include a T47-68 threaded bottom bracket, and a tapered head tube with 1 1/8 – 1 1/4″ bearings with SLT technology.

Colnago calls the Steelnovo’s geometry “modern” with seven sizes available from 42cm to 57cm. You might expect that a limited edition 70th Anniversary bike from Colnago would be expensive, and you’d be correct. The retail price is set at $18,000, but hey, you could still buy a couple of these before that $50k Specialized. Initially, the Stelnovo Settanta will only be available from colnago.com, but after 15 days if there are still any left, you’ll be able to order it from an authorized dealer.
