Why England vs New Zealand test series wasn’t a part of the ICC WTC 2021-23 cycle?
The World Test Championship’s inception has resulted in a particular format for arranging matches. Under the championship, each team is required to play six series—three at home and three away. Because it would have forced England to play an extra away series and New Zealand to play an extra home series, which would have interfered with the scheduling of other games, the England-New Zealand series does not count towards the championship.
Only India, Australia, and Sri Lanka, however, have a chance of reaching the World Test Championship final in the 2021–2023 cycle. India and Australia are the front-runners to advance to the final since Sri Lanka will need to sweep their two-match away Test series against New Zealand by a score of 2-0 in order to stay in the race. This seems difficult given the type of team Sri Lanka currently has. When it is about competing under swing or overcast conditions, New Zealand is significantly superior to Sri Lanka.
