Last Summer ending explained & season 2 renewal possibilities explored: Do Ha-gyeong and Do-ha get their happily-ever-after?

Episode 12 of Last Summer premiered on Viki on December 7. The series tracks twin brothers split by their parents’ breakup. Younger twin Baek Do-ha was raised in the United States. Meanwhile, older twin Baek Do-yeong remained in South Korea. Both characters are played by Lee Jae-wook. Each summer, Do-ha makes a 21-day return to the home country, where he lodges in a duplex with his father and sibling.

Their neighbor Song Ha-gyeong (Choi Seung-eun) grew up next door. Her father is close friends with the twins’ dad. As kids, Ha-gyeong and the seasonal guest disputed constantly. Those fights, however, quietly turned into feelings. She never spoke them aloud. Soon, an incident changes their lives forever.

Last Summer episodes 11 & 12 brief recap

In earlier Last Summer episodes before the finale, Do-a keeps pressing Ha-gyeong to admit her real feelings. She tries to stay with Seo So-hyeok to prove she has moved on, yet she eventually realizes her emotions for Do-ha are stronger. She then ends her relationship with Soo-hyeok. He also accepts it quietly and asks for one final date.

They go to an amusement park in school uniforms, and he even invites D-ha, turning the day into a mild rivalry that closes his storyline on a calm note. After Ha-gyeong confesses, she and Do-ha start dating. They skip work, play games, cook small remedies, and make up for lost years. Meanwhile, Lee-seul, who planned to marry Seung-taek after a decade together, sees their relationship fall apart.

She later suggests the “Song Ha-gyeong game,” in which they say the opposite of what they feel. Seung-taek refuses and tells her he cannot stay friends. Do-ha and Ha-gyeong also face a turning point when Do-ha returns after five months with Baek Do-yeong’s remains. The long-feared truth is confirmed that his twin is no more.

At the same time, the Patan High School observatory project runs into trouble when public criticism rises suddenly. Do-ha senses manipulation. He works with Ha-gyeong and the village group, the Pavenjers, to trace the source. They uncover Jeon Nam-jin and Chang-joo, who stirred public anger to push a solar power project they invested in. Both are soon arrested. The team completes the observatory that Baek Do-yeong dreamed of.

After the project ends, Ha-gyeong gifts Do-ha a watch during a date. She urges him to restart the abandoned Hermann Project. He hesitates, but appreciates her thought. The finale begins with Do-ha and Ha-gyeong waking up together. Do-ha later complains to Su-bak that she knows the house’s birthday and Su-bak’s birthday but not his.

Ha-gyeong secretly plans a birthday surprise and asks others what he likes. They try to spend the day alone, yet his parents arrive unexpectedly and interrupt. During Christmas, Do-ha and Ha-gyeong enjoy a quiet evening. Meanwhile, Lee-seul and Seung-taek argue at a place they once visited yearly. The fight continues at the house until Do-ha and Ha-gyeong step outside to give them space.

Soon after, Do-ha finds an ultrasound photo and assumes Ha-gyeong is pregnant. He adjusts his behavior instantly, hoping to support her. Later, he learns the scan belongs to Lee-seul and Seung-taek, who reconciled on the same night they fought. Last Summer ends with Lee-seul and Seung-taek’s wedding. The bouquet lands in Ha-gyeong’s hands, hinting at her future. That night, Do-ha and Ha-gyeong share a quiet kiss.

Could there be a season 2 of Last Summer?

A second season for Last Summer looks unlikely. The story closes almost every major thread, and the finale doesn’t leave space for a new arc to grow. Do-ha and Ha-gyeong settle into a clear future. Their relationship reaches a steady place, not a cliffhanger. Moreover, Baek Do-yeong’s fate is also confirmed.

Lee-seul and Seung-taek also finish their long storyline with reconciliation and marriage. Soo-hyeok gets a proper send-off and doesn’t have an open path that needs exploring, too. Everything essential is tied up, and the drama ends in a way that signals completion rather than continuation.

Last Summer was broadcast on KBS2 in its regular weekend drama slot. Internationally, all 12 episodes are available for streaming on Viki.
