Manchester United will target an impressive young manager on the continent who could be on his way back to the Premier League, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Carrick: “I know what it takes to succeed here”
It’s like Groundhog Day at Old Trafford after Man United turned to a former player in the hope of turning their fortunes around. This time, however, Michael Carrick will be looking to avoid a repeat of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign and drag the Red Devils and his own managerial career towards success until at least the end of the season.
Speaking to reporters after officially arriving, Carrick said: “I know what it takes to succeed here.
“My focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing.
“I have worked with a number of the players already and have obviously continued to watch the team closely in recent years. I have total belief in their talents, dedication and ability to be successful here.
“There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves.”

Manchester United already have a star who could match Antoine Semenyo levels under Michael Carrick.
If the interim boss is looking for an easy start then he may just have to look elsewhere, though. Up next, Man United square off against Manchester City in the Manchester derby. It simply doesn’t get much bigger for Carrick, who could instantly reignite belief at Old Trafford with a shock win.
Every victory will spark questions about a permanent gig too, but reports suggest that INEOS have already set their sights on another, long-term option.
Man Utd definitely eyeing De Zerbi, says Romano
That long-term option may well be Roberto De Zerbi. According to Fabrizio Romano, Man United are definitely eyeing De Zerbi alongside names such as Thomas Tuchel ahead of the summer.
The transfer expert told his YouTube channel: “Two names I can guarantee will be considered by INEOS are Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi.
“Today [I’ve received] many questions on De Zerbi. Let me clarify again, Tuchel is fully focused on England of course, and nothing can be agreed while there is a World Cup coming in the summer, so eventually after that.
“De Zerbi is doing a great job at Marseille, his focus is on Marseille. But these two managers were on the list at Man Utd in the summer of 2024. They decided to continue with Erik ten Hag, but before that at that point, they met with De Zerbi and Tuchel.”
De Zerbi’s record at Brighton was impressive and he’s since continued to impress at Marseille. Dubbed “unique” by Pep Guardiola during his time in Sussex, the Italian could yet become the Spaniard’s biggest rival in the summer by joining Man United.
