NFL draft expert Mel Kiper delivers brutal reality check on Carson Beck’s NFL future: “He’s a guy I think could be a career backup”

NFL draft expert Mel Kiper has given a grim assessment of Carson Beck’s draft stock and future in the league. A year after switching from Georgia to Miami for his last year of college football, Beck and the Hurricanes are in the national championship game.

The Hurricanes are facing the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers in the battle for the national title. For Beck, this is a huge milestone after his draft stock plummeted in the aftermath of his injury in the 2024 SEC Championship game.

However, ESPN draft expert Kiper does not think the future holds so much for the quarterback as a pro. Kiper, speaking on Wednesday’s edition of Get Up, said:

“Well, he could be in that fourth, fifth quarterback spot. You have obviously Mendoza, Dante Moore … he’s at two, Ty Simpson, Trinidad Chambliss. Does he get an extra year? And then you have Carson Beck with Garrett Nussmeier, Drew Allar in that mix as a late day two, early day three type. This is a guy who has to cut down on those interceptions—23 interceptions over the last two years. But this past season, this year, the best year overall. We look back at Georgia, what he was this season, best year overall for Carson Beck. He’s a guy I think could be a career backup in the NFL. I’d say late day two, early day three for him.”

Carson Beck’s numbers for the 2025 season

In 15 games for Miami this season, Beck has thrown for 3,581 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with a 73.3% completion rate. Before his move to Miami, Beck was a starter for the Georgia Bulldogs for two seasons.

He has compiled 11,493 passing yards for 87 touchdowns and 31 interceptions with a 69.7% completion rate.

Carson Beck hit a touchdown run in the final minute of the Fiesta Bowl showdown against Ole Miss to put the Rebels through. Speaking on his performance after the game, Mario Cristobal said:

“Tribute to him, testament to him and his teammates. So many different things on that drive that were executed at a high level. Handful of third downs that were not the easiest in the world. But elite protection. Elite route running. Contested catches. Being hard to tackle.”

The national championship game is set to be played on Monday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
