India beat Pakistan in an ICC tournament once again. They top Group A and have qualified for the Super 8s with three win out of three.
Pakistan will need to beat Namibia in their final game on Wednesday to assure their own progress.
Time for us to call it a day, thanks for tuning in, goodbye.
The Captains speak:
Suryakumar Yadav – India captain:
This is for India. We played the same brand of cricket we wanted to play. At 0-1, someone needed to take responsibility and Ishan did that amazingly. There was a bit of a slump but that is the beauty of T20 cricket.
As soon as we reached 175 we thought it was 15-20 runs over par. At 155 it would have been a very tight game. Hardik took the new ball and took charge. Bumrah then showed why he is the best in the world. It was great to see everyone contributing.”
Salman Ali Agha – Pakistan captain:
We went with four spinner and they had an off-day. Our execution was missing in some parts. With the bat, we did not start well. If you lose 3-4 wickets in the Powerplay, you are always chasing the game. In the first innings, it was a bit tacky and the ball was gripping too. The pitch played better in the second innings but we did not bowl according to the situation and we did not apply ourselves with the bat.
In these games the emotions are always going to be high, we just need to deal with it. We have a game in a couple of days and we have to look forward to it. We need to win that and qualify. Then it is a new tournament.”
India’s Ishan Kishan is the player of the match. He looked like he was playing on a different to wicket to everyone else with his 77 off 40 balls.
The wicket was not that easy. Sometimes you just have to believe and focus on your strengths. I was just watching the ball, sticking to my strengths and making them run as much as possible. I did work a lot on my off-side game, so then I can have them bowl where I want them to bowl. On a big ground, you get bigger gaps. Trying to hit the gaps, trying to take two runs.
We knew we had to put up a total of around 160 to 170. India v Pakistan is always a special game, not just for us but our country as well. They had pretty good spinners in their side. Winning this against Pakistan, it will give us confidence going forward.”
Pakistan all out 114, India win by 61 runs
If you need a job doing, do it yourself. Hardik is spewing as Shaheen is shelled behind the stumps and then in the deep. He responds by uprooting Usman Tariq’s middle peg to seal a thumping win for India.
17th over: Pakistan 106-9 (Shah Afridi 16, Tariq 0) Shaheen thumps through cover and swivels a pull away for a second four in the over. 70 needed off 18 balls. Ahem.
16th over: Pakistan 97-9 (Shah Afridi 7, Tariq 0) Varun traps new man Usman Tariq on the pad… but it was just sliding down! We come very close to a hat-trick for the second time today.
WICKET! Abrar Ahmed lbw b Varun 0 (Pakistan 97-9)
Pinned on the back leg! Abrar goes first ball and now it is Varun Chakravarthy’s turn to be on a hat-trick!
WICKET! Faheem Ashraf c Singh b Varun 10 (Pakistan 97-8)
This one is held though, Pakistan on the brink.
15th over: Pakistan 94-7 (Ashraf 8, Shah Afridi 6) Shaheen splices Varma high up in the air but the bowler fluffs his lines and drops the return catch. It was over his shoulder but still, he won’t like the replay of that one.
14th over: Pakistan 89-7 (Ashraf 7, Shah Afridi 2) Pakistan need 87 off 36 balls and that ain’t happening.
13th over: Pakistan 84-7 (Ashraf 5, Shah Afridi 1) Faheem shows the rest of the batting line up how to do it, head over the ball and committed to the stroke, it whistles through cover along then deck for four. Shaheen has joined him in the middle, he won’t die wondering.
WICKET! Shadab Khan c Dube b Tilak Varma 14 (Pakistan 78-7)
A very bad shot. Swipe across the line and on your way.
12th over: Pakistan 78-6 (S Khan 14, Ashraf 0) Faheem Ashraf blocks out Kuldeep’s final two balls in the over. We’ll have more spin, Tilak Varma is going to turn his arm over.
WICKET! Mohammad Nawaz c Dube b Kuldeep Yadav 4 (Pakistan 78-5)
Nawaz’ stay is short. He sweeps a four but then follows that up with a mis-timed plink off a full bunger that is swallowed by Dube in the deep.
11th over: Pakistan 73-5 (S Khan 12, Nawaz 0) Mohammad Nawaz is the new man, Pakistan need more than eleven an over from here and they’ve lost half of their wickets.
WICKET! Usman Khan st Ishan Kishan b Patel 44 (Pakistan 73-5)
Axar holds it back, Usman Khan tries to force on the offside and clambers out of his crease to do so, he misses and Kishan takes the bails.
10th over: Pakistan 71-4 (U Khan 43, S Khan 12) Excellent first over from Kuldeep, he beats Shadab with a fizzing delivery outside off and is in and out of the over for just five runs. Pakistan need Need 105 from 60 balls.
9th over: Pakistan 66-4 (U Khan 40, S Khan 10) Nine runs off the over, Axar Patel is slapped for two fours by Usman Khan from the first two balls of the over but recovers well to only get taken for a single from the rest. Not enough from Pakistan, especially as Kuldeep Yadav is about to come on for a twirl.
8th over: Pakistan 57-4 (U Khan 31, S Khan 10) Chakravarthy continues, Shadab drives for three through the covers and then deploys a clever dab shot that gets him four past the keeper. Ten off the over.
7th over: Pakistan 47-4 (U Khan 29, S Khan 2) Usman Khan isn’t done yet, he glances for four past the keeper and then uses his feet to get out to an Axar Patel length ball and drive down the ground for a second boundary in the over. Oh ye of little faith! (It is still done though)
6th over: Pakistan 38-4 (U Khan 21, S Khan 1) Varun Chakravarthy dance through an over of googlies and flippers that costs just four runs. Barring something mid boggling, this game is done.
5th over: Pakistan 34-4 (U Khan 18, S Khan 0) Shadab Khan joins Usman Khan in the middle. He’s nearly pinned first ball by Axar too but this one was sneaking down leg.
WICKET! Babar Azam b Patel 5 (Pakistan 34-4)
Babar swipes and misses, Axar uproots his middle peg. Carnage.
4th over: Pakistan 25-3 (Babar 5, Khan 9) Fantastic over from Bumrah, he’s up at 145kph for most if it before dropping it right down for a slower delivery that flummoxes Babar. Just four runs off it, India well on top.
3rd over: Pakistan 21-3 (Babar 4, Khan 7) Hardik Pandya continues with a slip in place, Pakistan in dire need of a parternship. Usman Khan swings through the line to pick up SIX down the ground. it already feels like this game could have gone for Pakistan, those three wickets were so wasteful.
2nd over: Pakistan 13-3 (Babar 2, Khan 0) Pakistan are crumbling in Colombo.
WICKET! Salman Agha c Pandya b Bumrah 4 (Pakistan 13-3)
Babar Azam flays a two into the off side and Salman Agha squeezes a full ball off his pads for four into the leg side…
GONE! That is a poor shot from Salman, no foot movement and no commitment, the ball tamely loops in the air and is caught by Pandya. Pakistan in the mire and Bumrah has two in his first over.
WICKET! Saim Ayub lbw b Bumrah 6 (Pakistan 6-2)
Stone dead! Saim Ayub has to go after Bumrah spears him right in front of middle stump. The batter reviews in vain and burns a review. Uh-oh.
1st over: Pakistan 0-1 (Agha 0, Ayub 0) Hardik and India start with a wicket maiden and the stadium is absolutely pumping. Here comes Jasprit Bumrah…
WICKET! Sahibzada Farhan c Singh b Pandya 0 (Pakistan 0-0)
Gone! Nightmare start for Pakistan as Farhan skies his fourth ball and is easily caught at mid on. Not ideal for the team in green.
Here come Pakistan’s openers for the chase. A bleached and shorn Hardik Pandya is going to open the bowling for India. Play!
India make 175-7 (Pakistan need 176 to win)
An eventful final over with 16 runs and two wickets off it. Shaheen is punished for bowling length, Rinku Singh smearing a SIX over the leg side and muscling a shorter ball away through the leg side for four more.
Sivam Dube is then run out trying to turn a one into a two, that leaves Axar Patel with one delivery to face. He flicks into the leg side and is… caught! Saim Ayub taking a fine tumbling catch.
India will be happy with that total, pressure on Pakistan.
19th over: India 159-5 (Dube 22, Singh 0) Tariq finishes with 1-24 from his four overs. Shaheen is going to bowl the final over of the innings. What can India muster?
WICKET! Suryakumar Yadav c Saim Ayub b Usman Tariq 32 (India 159-5)
Usman Tariq’s fine performance continues, the Indian captain holes out and has to depart.
18th over: India 154-4 (Suryakumar 32, Dube 18) Abrar Ahmed returns and the Indian batters climb into him. Suryakumar whips a four through midwicket before Dube absolutely spangles a short ball over the same area for SIX. Much needed run injection from India, 14 off it.
17th over: India 140-4 (Suryakumar 26, Dube 10) Extremely tidy stuff from Usman Tariq, just four singles off his third over.
