Rangers chiefs battling billionaires to back Rohl with 7-figure signing from elite European league

Rangers owners 49ers Enterprises are ready to back Danny Rohl in the summer transfer window, and have now joined the race to sign a Serie A midfielder despite competition from Saudi billionaires.

The Gers are already reaping the benefits from the 49ers’ January spending, defeating Hearts 4-2 last time out in a crucial victory in pursuit of the Scottish Premiership title.

It’s set to go right to the death in Scotland, with just three points separating leaders Hearts, Rangers in second and Celtic in third. One slip-up and it may well be game over for the shock leaders, with the two Old Firm giants simply waiting to take full advantage.

With or without title glory, however, the 49ers already have one eye on the summer transfer window. The rumour mill, on that front, is already entering overdrive as they look to hand Rohl further improvements.

A familiar name in Todd Cantwell is among the names who have reportedly entered Rangers’ radar. It goes without saying that it would be a shock return, but Rohl is reportedly ready to push the Gers to welcome the midfielder back to Ibrox this summer.

The Gers could make a shock move…

But he’s not the only name on their supposed shortlist. Dundee’s Luke Graham is also a target, as per recent reports, and could opt to stay in Scotland this summer by joining Rangers.

Meanwhile, the Scottish giants could also turn towards Serie A in pursuit of improvements. According to Africa Foot, as relayed by Sport Witness, the 49ers are now battling to sign Lassana Coulibaly from Lecce against Saudi club Al-Fateh.

    £3.5m Coulibaly could replace Raskin

It should come as no surprise that Rangers are reportedly targeting a midfield reinforcement this summer. Even after recent improvements under Rohl, there’s still every chance that Nicolas Raskin departs at the end of the season.

The Belgian hasn’t been short on interest in the last year, with Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs reportedly eyeing a move at the end of last year, and Raskin could finally seal an Ibrox exit if that interest returns this summer.

If that does prove to be the case, then Coulibaly could be an ideal option. The 29-year-old isn’t short on experience, having featured at AFCON for Mali earlier this year and played in Serie A and Ligue 1.

It also wouldn’t be the first time that Coulibaly has played for Rangers. He joined on loan from Angers in the 2018/19 campaign, and could now arrive permanently for around €4m (£3.5m).

It would be an unexpected return all these years later, but Coulibaly could yet solve Rohl’s midfield problem if Raskin departs this summer.
