West Bromwich Albion could find themselves changing managers yet again following Eric Ramsay’s disastrous run in charge, with the Baggies board considering their options.
Ramsay under ‘huge pressure’ after West Brom defeat to Coventry
Ramsay is already believed to be under ‘huge pressure’ following a dismal run of results, despite being appointed just under six weeks ago.
West Brom were supposed to be one of the Championship‘s great sleeping giants — a club too big for this division, with the quality to push for a return to the Premier League. That feels like a very long time ago.
Today’s 2-0 home defeat to Frank Lampard’s Coventry City told a familiar and deeply troubling story at The Hawthorns.
Ephron Mason-Clark punished a high defensive line to lob the opener inside five minutes. Jack Rudoni thundered in a second before the half-hour mark. And that, for all intents and purposes, was that.
West Brom offered nothing in response — not a shot on target until the 79th minute. The home fans let their feelings be known with chants aimed squarely at the man in the dugout.
It was another day of misery for Ramsay.
West Brom can hire Ramsay upgrade in Championship-winning 4-2-3-1 manager
West Brom could land an instant upgrade on Eric Ramsay by moving for this out of work head coach.
The 34-year-old has now gone eight games without a win since arriving from MLS side Minnesota United in mid-January, picking up just three points across that stretch, with his side failing to score a single league goal in 360 minutes of Championship football.
He has never led his side into a winning position since taking charge. Not once.
Coventry’s victory left West Brom in the bottom three — only kept out of the relegation zone earlier by Stoke City’s late equaliser against Leicester.
The threat of League One football, something unthinkable for a club of West Brom’s stature just a couple of seasons ago, is now a genuine possibility.
With 14 games remaining and the gap between safety and disaster razor-thin, time is running out.
West Brom could appoint James Morrison as interim yet again
According to talkSPORT reporter Ben Jacobs, writing in a piece for GiveMeSport, the board are now considering making yet another managerial change, despite having handed Ramsay a two-and-a-half-year contract just weeks ago.
That decision, recommended by former sporting director Andrew Nestor before his own messy departure from the club, is looking increasingly costly with every passing weekend.
Should another managerial change be made, former first-team coach and club legend James Morrison could again be asked to steady the ship temporarily.
Morrison, who also works as an assistant coach for Scotland boss Steve Clarke, has already taken interim charge on two previous occasions and could now step into the role for a third time.
Ramsay arrived with an impressive coaching CV — experience under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag at Manchester United — but no prior experience as a senior manager in English football.
Former defender Curtis Davies, speaking on Sky Sports at the time of his appointment, said publicly that he had expected someone more battle-hardened to come through the door.
Those words are ringing louder than ever now.
Ramsay himself cut a deflated figure in his post-match comments following the Coventry defeat, doing little to quiet the calls for his removal. The atmosphere at The Hawthorns has turned toxic, and the board cannot afford to wait much longer.
There is also interest building in Sean Dyche, recently sacked by Nottingham Forest, as a possible longer-term solution.
Dyche’s experience of Championship relegation battles, and his record of guiding Burnley to promotion on two occasions, makes him an obvious candidate for a club in need of someone who has survived this kind of fight before.
