The Florida State University (FSU) community has moved from anguish to hope following the shocking incident involving freshman linebacker Ethan Pritchard. On September 1, 2025, what should have been an ordinary family Sunday in Havana, Florida, turned into a nightmare when the 18-year-old was shot in the back of the head.
His father, Earl Pritchard, recounted the chilling moments leading up to the attack as Ethan was driving his aunt back home after a family gathering near the Havana Heights apartments.
“They turned the corner, and as soon as they turned the corner, they heard gunshots,” Earl explained. Authorities later confirmed that the athlete was the victim of a case of “mistaken identity,” a tragic error that left him fighting for his life in the intensive care unit at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
The emotional impact inside the locker room was profound. Head coach Mike Norvell, who visited Ethan constantly, acknowledged the gravity of the situation at the time when speaking to the media: “It’s a lot – I’m not going to say it isn’t.”
Today, the narrative has shifted toward one of triumph. After months of intense rehabilitation in Jacksonville – where he completed up to eight sessions per day – FSU recruiting director Devin Rispress confirmed that Ethan is now moving on his own: “Our guy is moving without a wheelchair and is gaining his weight back. He’s also returned to school and is doing well academically.”
For his part, Ethan has shown that his goal is to return to playing football. His recovery after being shot in the head has been described as astonishing. With eight daily rehabilitation sessions, the FSU freshman continues to fight for his dream.
“When I first got here, I couldn’t even move my entire right side,” he recalled. Today, his progress is remarkable, and he remains focused on the gridiron: “The goal is to get back on the football field… I’m not going to rush it. But yeah, just getting back out there.” His discipline has become his greatest play.
The state of the investigation: An ongoing search for justice
Despite Pritchard’s remarkable physical progress, the legal case remains uncertain. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office are currently leading the investigation, but to date, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been publicly identified.
Local authorities have not revealed a specific motive beyond confirming that Pritchard was an accidental target in an area where gun violence erupted without warning.
