Blake Griffin shares unexpected backstory behind viral Warriors fan clip

Blake Griffin built a reputation as one of the more approachable stars of his generation, and that has not changed now that he’s moved into broadcasting. The six-time All-Star joined Prime Video’s crew after wrapping up a 13-year playing career, and he’s been a natural fit so far.

Griffin spent most of his time in the league with the Los Angeles Clippers and Detroit Pistons, putting together a solid resume across 765 regular-season games. He averaged 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists during that stretch.

Now he is working the other side of the game, breaking down plays and telling stories that give fans a different look at life in the NBA. He did exactly that during Prime’s broadcast of the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves matchup.

Blake Griffin intentionally doused a Warriors fan

Griffin addressed a moment from his Clippers days that went viral years ago, when he was caught on camera splashing water on a fan seated courtside. People have wondered about it ever since, and Griffin finally gave context. Griffin told the NBA on Prime crew

“I actually know him,” Griffin said. “Shout out to Will Melvin, nice fella. He was just chirping. He’s a Warriors fan, sitting courtside, right next to our bench. That was actually a thing we used to do in high school. Unscrew the water bottle lid, blowout game, if the student section behind you, everybody would stand up together at the same time, and water would go everywhere. And we’d be like, ‘Ohh! I’m so sorry,'”
