“You got a Ferrari and you got a Tonka Truck”: Brandin Cooks shares honest take on Mike McDaniel helping Justin Herbert as Chargers’ new OC

Former New Orleans wide receiver Brandin Cooks compared Mike McDaniel and Jim Harbaugh to a Ferrari and Tonka truck, anticipating McDaniel’s impact on Justin Herbert. Cooks appeared on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football earlier this week, where he commented on what McDaniel brings to the Chargers as offensive coordinator.

Describing how McDaniel and Harbaugh complement each other, Cooks drew a car analogy, using a Ferrari and a Tonka truck to make his point.

“Two different personalities as well,” he said. “You got a Ferrari and a Tonka Truck in the hardball. I look forward to it because Justin Herbert can make any throw on the field. That Mike McDaniel offense, as we all know, my favorite tree is that Shanahan offense, right?

“Shanahan, McVay, O’Connell—I think that’s the best tree in football when it comes to offensive play-calling. So I look forward to Mike going out into the Chargers and making some of those calls.”

Harbaugh hired Mike McDaniel in January to fill the offensive coordinator role after firing his former offensive coordinator, Greg Roman. McDaniel was also fresh from being terminated as the Miami Dolphins’ head coach after four seasons in charge.

Before accepting the Chargers’ offer, the former Dolphins coach was linked to head coaching opportunities with the Browns, Bills, and Raiders. He also received offers from the Eagles and Buccaneers for the offensive coordinator role.

What Mike McDaniel said about working with Justin Herbert

On his opening press conference as the Chargers’ offensive coordinator, McDaniel expressed his excitement at the prospect of coaching Justin Herbert. He also indicated that the excitement went both ways.

“We’re both geeked for the future and the possibilities,” he said.

However, he warned that his offense will not be heavily reliant on the quarterback’s exceptional ability in order to be effective.

“Not relying too heavily on Justin’s ability to do above and beyond, I think, is critical to maximize those types of opportunities,” he said. “That’ll be one of the first things that we’ll try to do, is take a little off his plate so that he is free to do that when his greatness is required.”

McDaniel is Harbaugh’s first offensive coordinator hire in the NFL other than Roman, whom he’d always worked with in the league. The former Dolphins coach described the opportunity to work with Harbaugh as “too good to pass up.”
