A WNBA superteam is forming.
On Saturday, ESPN reported that free-agent All-Star guard Satou Sabally has agreed to a multiyear contract with the New York Liberty, further cementing the team as one of, if not the best entering the 2026 season.
Last year, Sabally started 39 games for the Phoenix Mercury, averaging 16.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. During the Mercury’s run to the WNBA Finals, Sabally averaged 19 points and seven rebounds per game.
New York Liberty make free-agency splash with Satou Sabally signing
Sabally’s move to New York reunites the three-time All-Star, who in 2023 was named Most Improved Player, with Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu. The two were teammates at Oregon from 2017-20 and selected Nos. 1 (Ionescu) and 2 (Sabally) in the 2020 WNBA Draft. The duo have unfinished business after their final collegiate season — when Oregon went 31-2 and was one of the top contenders to win the NCAA Tournament — was canceled before March Madness began due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While they never won a championship together in Eugene, Sabally and Ionescu have a great shot of winning a title with the Liberty, who won their first WNBA championship in 2024. Last season, they exited in Round 1 after losing the best-of-three series to the Mercury.
Earlier this offseason, two-time MVP Breanna Stewart announced she’d be returning to New York after entering free agency as one of over 100 WNBA players on the open market. On Saturday, forward Jonquel Jones, another free agent, agreed to a multiyear contract to remain with the organization, per WNBA insider Madeline Kenney.
