New York City and Charlotte lock horns at Yankee Stadium in MLS on Saturday. Both teams have seen an identical run in the competition so far this season, winning three games and losing twice each from the opening seven to collect 11 points.
After going their opening four games of the campaign unbeaten, New York City failed to win any of their next three MLS clashes, losing to Inter Miami and Vancouver Whitecaps on either side of a 1-1 draw to St. Louis.
Thanks for the submission!
But on Wednesday, Pascal Jansen’s side got back to winning ways with a convincing 5-2 win over Westchester SC in the round of 32 of the US Open Cup, inspired by a sensational hat-trick from Talles Magno.
Charlotte are right behind them by virtue of an inferior goal difference (+4 to New York’s +5) and dropped to fifth after their 2-1 loss to Nashville on 12 April. But like the Yankees themselves, they too picked up a big win in the cup in midweek as they crushed Charlotte Independence 6-0.
Six different players were on target for the Crowns, who ran riot in the second half following a rather cagey opening stanza that saw them net just once.
