This past week at the Madrid Open has seen several players deal with health issues on the court. Polish star Iga Swiatek, Gauff’s fellow American Madison Keys, Liudmila Samsonova and ATP player Marin Cilic were forced to retire midway through the tournament due to sickness. Jim Courier hypothesised that the shrimp provided at the event was the culprit behind the barrage of illnesses.
Thanks for the submission!
Recently, a TikTok creator added on to Courier’s theory, claiming she was safe from the stomach virus affecting the tennis players as she avoided the shrimp. Dropping by in the comments section of the post, Coco Gauff expressed her frustration with her sickness, writing,
“I didn’t even eat the shrimp so idek what happened to me. 😭”
Despite her struggles with her health, Gauff was able to pull through in her round of 32 encounter against Sorana Cirstea, defeating the Romanian 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

“Honestly, I was trying not to throw up on the court. It was a weird, weird feeling today. I don’t know how I got through it. I just pulled out in Indian Wells. I’m not someone who likes to pull out, so I didn’t want to pull out again today. I’m glad I was able to get through it.”
Up next, Coco Gauff will now take on Linda Noskova at the Madrid Open. The duo are scheduled to be in action on Monday, April 7 for their round of 16 encounter.
