Neymar Jr suffers fresh injury setback days after inclusion in Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad

Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr has picked up a fresh injury just weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup after he was included in the Selecao squad.

Santos head of medical, Rodrigo Zogaib, confirmed that Neymar suffered a 2-millimeter edema, causing swelling in his right calf. Speaking to Brazilian network Ge, Zogaib confirmed the extent of the injury. He said (via ESPN):

“Neymar has a minor calf injury, an edema.”

Despite the setback, Zogaib insisted that the star forward will be able to join the Selecao squad on May 27, when Brazil national team will start preparations for the World Cup:

“But, according to our planning, his progress will allow him to be fit next week when he will join up with the national team.”

The confirmation of the injury comes just 2 days after his inclusion in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad. Neymar reportedly picked up the knock in Santos’ 3-0 loss against Coritiba on Sunday before the national team call up. He was then left out of Santos’ 2-2 draw against San Lorenzo in the Copa Sudamericana.

Recent reports suggest Ancelotti and his team were worried about the Brazilian star’s availability for their pre-tournament friendlies in the hours leading up to the final roster announcement.

The 34-year-old star is expected to miss Santos’ next games against Gremio on Saturday and against Deportivo Cuenca on Tuesday to help with his rehabilitation. He is then expected to link up with the Brazil squad on May 27 before their friendly against Panama on May 31.

Brazil are in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They are set to take on Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland in the group stages.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti explains Neymar Jr role in 2026 FIFA World Cup squad

Speaking after announcing the Brazil squad for the World Cup, Ancelotti spoke about what he expects from the Brazilian superstar. He said (via Marca):

“We have evaluated Neymar throughout the year. He is an important player, he will be again during this World Cup”, the Italian said at a press conference.

“He has the same role and the same obligations as the other 25 players. He can play, not play, go out or be on the bench. He has the same responsibility as others. I want to be clear and honest. He will play if he deserves it. I think it is important not to put all expectations on a single player.”
