PACHUCA, Mexico – On May 23, Club América defeated the Washington Spirit 5-3 in the CONCACAF Women’s Champions Cup final. The matchup was a high-scoring affair with a total of eight goals in over 90 minutes. América and Washington faced off at the Estadio Hidalgo, a storied football stadium in Mexico.

The CONCACAF Women’s Champions Cup is an annual club competition that features some of the best teams throughout North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The competition featured 11 teams from throughout the region and began in 2025. Winners of the tournament further elevate their teams on the international stage.

Club América were the first team to put themselves on the board. During the 22nd minute, on a pass from forward Scarlett Cambero, midfielder Aylín Aviléz put the ball in the back of the net.

It did not take long for América to double their lead. Five minutes later, forward Geyse secured the club’s second goal on another assist from Cambero.

While a 2-0 deficit may seem intimidating for some, the Spirit were up to the task. Forward Sofia Cantore shot the ball from distance to put Washington on the board during the 30th minute.

Thirty-six seconds into the second half, forward Rosemonde Kouassi tied the match at two goals apiece.

“Incredible effort from the team, to be two goals down and come back and tie it up,” said Kate Wiesner, a defender for the Spirit.

Kouassi scored her second goal of the day during the 58th minute to give Washington their first and only lead of the game. Geyse quickly responded in the 61st minute with her second goal of the match.

The game sat in a deadlock throughout the next 10 minutes, but América manager Ángel Villacampa made substitutions that turned the tides for the club. Midfielder Irene Guerrero provided a spark off the bench. For Cambero’s third assist, Guerrero scored in the 79th minute to regain the lead for América.

Geyse returned the favor from the first half and passed to Cambero who scored the eighth goal of the match. The goal sealed the win for the club with a goal in the 96th minute.

As the winner of the CONCACAF Women’s Champions Cup, Club América earned a spot in the 2027 FIFA Women’s Champions Cup and an opportunity to participate in the 2028 FIFA Women’s Club World Cup.
