    Tough Loss in First Round of NCAAs – Methodist University Athletics

    VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.  Methodist women’s soccer took on Rowan University in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament on Saturday morning. The Monarchs could not upset the No. 23 team in the nation as the Profs won 5-1 on Foster Field.

    Final score: Rowan def. Methodist, 5-1

    Records: Methodist 16-3-1, Rowan 14-0-4

    Location: Foster Field, Virginia Beach, Virginia

    HOW IT HAPPENED

    • Less than two minutes into the match, Emma DeMaise put Rowan up 1-0. She headed the ball in after Lianna SanFelice played the ball in off a free kick.
    • The Profs tallied two goals in the 13th minute. First came off the foot of Olivia Giordano and then 40 seconds later Nina Carlson scored to make it 3-0.
    • Before the half, Giordano found the back of the net a second time. Gabby Dean dished it off to Giordano for the one timer, in the 25 minute.
    • Rowan’s final score of the day came in the 59th minute. Carlson first took a shot, which was saved, followed by Dean capitalized on the deflection.
    • For Methodist, Corrine Shovlain registered the lone goal for the Monarchs off a free kick in the 66th minute.

    STAT FACTS

    • The Profs controlled the ball in the attacking zone for majority of the contest. Their 23 shots and 11 corner kicks contributed to the field possession.
    • Of the game-high nine saves, Carolina Simpkins had five while Mary Newman came away with four.
