After the win against the Denver Broncos, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs not only increased their record to 13-3, but the Kansas City QB matched a mark that only two players in NFL history have achieved: multiple seasons with 5,000 or more yards passing.
Mahomes, the frontrunner to reach the NFL MVP this season, had a 328-yard game, 3 TDs and 1 INT, surpassing the 5,000 mark for the season by 48 yards. With this, he becomes the third QB in NFL history to have multiple campaigns surpassing that mark.
Mahomes did it in the last quarter of the game
Mahomes surpassed 5,000 yards on the year during the final quarter of the Chiefs’ divisional matchup against the Broncos, when he connected with Blake Bell for a 17-yard touchdown.
With this, Mahomes has his second season surpassing that figure, the same as Tom Brady. They are surpassed by Drew Brees, who with the New Orleans Saints achieved that feat on five occasions.
The first time Mahomes accomplished it was in 2018, when he took home NFL MVP and NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors for the season. He currently leads the NFL in multiple statistics, including passing touchdowns (40).
They close against Raiders, who were eliminated after losing to SF
The Chiefs and Mahomes will try to improve their record to 14-3 next week when they visit the Las Vegas Raiders, who put up a great fight against the San Francisco 49ers at home, but lost 37-34 and are officially eliminated from the Playoffs.
Kansas can still be the No. 1 seed in the AFC depending on what happens on Monday Night with the Buffalo Bills, who visit the Cincinnati Bengals.
