MI Cape Town’s poor SA20 2023 campaign ended with another big loss against Joburg Super Kings in the 29th match on Monday, February 6. Uncapped English batter Leus du Plooy top-scored with 81* off 48 to help Joburg Super Kings post a big total of 189 runs while batting first, and then Kyle Simmonds put on a masterclass with three wickets to earn a big 76-run win.
Playing in their last group-stage game, Rashid Khan won the toss and elected to field first at The Wanderers in Johannesburg. His decision instantly succeeded with George Linde dismissing the opponent’s captain Faf du Plessis, the tournament’s leading run-scorer, on the innings’ first delivery.
English pace all-rounder Sam Curran dismissed Reeza Hendricks for a duck in the very next over and the Super Kings were struggling at 12/2 in two overs. But du Plooy eased off the pressure by smashing 18 runs to star English pacer Jofra Archer in the third over. He kept the scoreboard moving from one end but the Super Kings lost the wickets from another.
In his only third SA20 game, Matthew Wade smashed 40 off 18 to keep the Super Kings on track for a big total. Leus du Plooy remained unbeaten at 81 as Joburg Super Kings posted 189/6 in 20 overs. Sam Curran and Jofra Archer took two wickets each, but Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan struggled for wickets with costly spells.
MI Cape Town’s batters struggled for a good start as Maheesh Theekshana took the early wicket of Wesley Marshall in the third over. In-form Rassie van der Dussen started well again but could not convert his 20 off 15 into a big knock.
Kyle Simmonds, the South African spinner, dismissed van der Dussen and Roelofsen in the eighth over, and MI Cape Town never recovered. Australian big-hitter Tim David smashed two sixes and a four but was caught while playing a big shot over long-on.
Young prodigy Dewald Brevis scored 27 off 26 but struggled for big shots throughout the game. Gerald Coetzee knocked over Brevis to end Cape Town’s innings for just 113 runs in 17.5 overs. Simmonds and Coetzee took three each while Theekshana bagged two crucial wickets for the Super Kings.

An 18 run over from Leus du Plooy against Jofra Archer. There’s just something about South African player’s with du as their middle name.
