It was not the first time she had been selected for the England squad. However, she had feared that a chance of appearing for the European champions may have gone forever after being forced to withdraw from the team late last year through injury.
“It was a hard time to sort of wrap my head around what had happened and probably it was mentally one of the toughest things I’ve experienced,” she admits.
“Playing for England has always been sort of the end goal for me and that for any young footballer growing up, they want to play for England.
“There was obviously that stress of ‘will my chance come again?’ but I spoke to Serena after learning that camp and she just said ‘focus on getting yourself back fit’ and that they’d take another look.”
Lucy describes training with some of the biggest names in the sport as “surreal” and a “crazy experience” but she has found ways to handle the pressure.
“You get a bit nervous in the car driving up and meeting everyone which is obviously quite nerve wracking, but I think everything you do, from your day-to-day life has led you to the moment that you’re at,” she states.
“So there’s nothing like overly special coming into camp that I’ve done any differently, but it’s remembering everything that’s come before has prepared you for this.”
