Tigers set to lose another veteran

He’s Tasmania’s all-time leading Sheffield Shield wicket-taker but it looks like a veteran of the Tigers pace attack could be set to return to his home state.

The Tasmanian Tigers could be without another veteran for next season with speculation at a high pace bowler Jackson Bird is set to depart the state.

Bird, who arrived in the Tasmania back in 2011, is understood to be returning home to New South Wales after accepting a two-year deal with the Blues.

The Tigers most successful Sheffield Shield bowler in history is understood to have declined a one-year deal with the Tigers with the option of a second over a confirmed two year contract back in his home state.

Bird has taken 350 Shield wickets from his 78 matches but that record looks set to end for the 36-year-old.

His departure would add to a growing list for Tasmania with fellow quick Peter Siddle confirmed to return home to Victoria while Ben McDermott is also set to move back to Queensland.

Tim Paine will also depart the squad following his first-class retirement while former skipper Matthew Wade’s future as a Tiger is still unclear given his desire to continue to play T20 cricket internationally while he is in the frame for the Australian team.

Cricket Tasmania declined to comment on Bird’s contract situation when contacted by The Mercury.
