However the Saints are standing firm in their £50m valuation.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move for the midfielder with the Blues likely to make a bid of their own.

Lavia established himself as one of the best young players in the Premier League last term after joining Southampton from Manchester City.

Arriving for a fee worth £14million, the 19-year-old made 34 appearances in all competitions for the Saints.

With Southampton suffering relegation to the Championship, Russell Martin’s side are somewhat powerless to resist the interest of the Premier League’s biggest club.

However with James Ward-Prowse also attracting interest from West Ham, they are reluctant to lose two key midfielders in one window.
