The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for the upcoming season with soaring expectations. After ending last year with a 12-5 record, their playoff run was cut short by a loss to the San Francisco 49ers. As 2023 unfolds, both the Cowboys and their enthusiastic fans anticipate rejoining the Super Bowl discussions.
The team boasts a constellation of stars across offense and defense. However, a surprising twist might see them parting ways with one of their starting wide receivers even before the season’s kickoff.
Wide receiver Michael Gallup emerges as a potential trade candidate for the Dallas Cowboys. According to Matt Holder of Bleacher Report, Michael Gallup could be the odd man out in Dallas:
“Despite amassing nearly 2,500 yards and 13 touchdowns in his first three years in the league, Michael Gallup’s last two seasons have been marked by frustration. The 27-year-old has grappled with injuries, resulting in consecutive seasons with career lows in receiving yards-445 in 2021 and 424 in 2022.”
Gallup could be traded before season begins
The Cowboys bolstered their lineup by acquiring Brandin Cooks during the offseason, which casts doubt on Gallup’s future with the team. Patrik Walker of the team’s website pointed out the emergence of second-year wide receiver Jalen Tolbert during training camp, further clouding Gallup’s position.
With two additional options now available to support CeeDee Lamb, Gallup’s role appears even more expendable. While his contract extends through 2026 and includes a potential out after this season, his market value increases.
Although Gallup’s recent performance has dipped from his earlier career achievements, and Jalen Tolbert’s rise is evident this preseason, considering a move like this might seem like a step backward for an offense aiming to make a bigger impact in 2023.
With Gallup in good health, the Cowboys boast one of the most formidable wide receiver groups in the league. Disrupting this balance could be a questionable approach to roster-building.
