Marco Silva rages over controversial Man City goal with fans left stunned by VAR call

Marco Silva has once again been left raging over a controversial goal as VAR failed to rule out Nathan Ake’s header.

The Fulham boss was seething last week after officials allowed Eddie Nketiah’s strike to stand in the 2-2 draw away at Arsenal.

His animated antics earned him a yellow card, and he was fortunate not to have been booked in Saturday’s clash away at the Etihad.

Though you can understand his reaction against the Citizens, as VAR somehow failed to disallow Ake’s header for offside.

With the game level at 1-1 just before the break, Ake restored City’s lead after Tim Ream cancelled out Julian Alvarez’s opener.

The Dutch defender was first to Phil Foden’s inswinging corner, with his cushioned header evading Bernd Leno and into the bottom left corner.

Though replays showed that Manuel Akanji, who was almost a couple of yards offside, was standing in the German goalkeeper’s eyeline.

Akanki didn’t make contact with the ball – as he knew himself he was offside – but instead dummied it.

This delayed Leno’s reaction in attempting to save the header, and despite the incident going to VAR, the goal was allowed to stand.

It sparked heated protests from Silva on the touchline as well as from the Fulham players on the pitch.

Football fans on social media were left equally stunned that the goal wasn’t chalked off, as one X user said: “VAR decision on the offside: Whatever City want.”

Another posted: “How on earth did all three on-field officials AND the VAR miss this? This isn’t a tough miss, this isn’t a 50-50 call.

“There is a blatant play on the ball by an offside player inhibiting the sight of the goalkeeper. Genuinely a stunning error.”

A third added: “Everyone working VAR needs to be fired. The officiating in this league is atrocious.”

Meanwhile this supporter simply stated: “VAR is f******useless.”
