ROME, Ga.  Five Methodist student-athletes were recognized among this week’s USA South Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week. The group of Monarchs features three volleyball players, one men’s soccer player, and one women’s soccer player.
After a 3-0 week against USA South opponents (including two sweeps), the Methodist volleyball team swept the conference volleyball accolades. Hannah Hewett, the senior setter, earned the Volleyball Player of the Week nod for the second straight week. She averaged 11.90 assists and 3.40 digs per set with two double-doubles. She recorded week match-highs of 46 assists and 16 digs versus Pfeiffer, as well as four service aces against Mary Baldwin.
The first of two Monarch “three-peats” this week, senior libero Blake O’Brien was once again named the Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week. She averaged 5.80 digs per set with week match-highs of 25 digs and 5 assists versus Brevard. O’Brien also recorded four service aces during the three matches.
Earning Volleyball Rookie of the Week honors, Savannah Hovander averaged 4.30 kills per set with a .400 hitting percentage. She recorded week match-highs of 20 kills against Pfeiffer and three blocks versus Mary Baldwin.
The Methodist men’s soccer team posted a 2-0 record last week with freshman Trey Gohr in goal, earning him Men’s Soccer Defender of the Week recognition. He played 140 minutes, stopping all nine shots that came his way. He made four saves in 50 minutes during a 4-0 win over Warren Wilson, and he made five saves for his first collegiate shutout in a 1-0 victory against Guilford.
As the Methodist women’s soccer team earned a 1-1 record last week, freshman Yaneli Sanchez picked up another Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week award (another “three-peat” award winner). She scored Methodist’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Guilford, then scored again in Saturday’s 10-0 victory versus Warren Wilson, extending her streak to five matches with at least one goal scored. She also contributed one assist during the win.
