The Steelers defense, led by linebackers T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith, singlehandedly defeated the Browns 26-22 on “Monday Night Football.” Did their performance solidify them as the best pass-rushing duo in the league?
Watt finished the night with one sack, which made him Pittsburgh’s all-time franchise sack leader, four quarterback hits, two tackles for a loss, one pass defensed, one fumble recovery and one touchdown.
Highsmith had one sack, two quarterback hits, one tackle for a loss, one pass defensed, one forced fumble, one interception and one touchdown.
Quarterback Kenny Pickett couldn’t help but praise the two players after another night where the offense struggled mightily.
“Hats off to our defense, played unbelievable. We’ve got the best player in the world, in my opinion, in 90 and 56 is close behind,” Pickett told reporters after the game. “Those guys did a hell of a job and happy that they’re on our side.”
Watt’s oldest brother, J.J. Watt, also took to social media to give his take on his brother’s primetime performance, although he may be a little biased.
“TJ WATT is the best defensive player on the planet. Stop trying to question it, stop trying to justify anyone else. He is the best. Period,” Watt posted on platform X.
There has been much talk about whether Browns DE Myles Garrett is the best defender in the league and if Garrett and DE Za’Darius Smith are the best duo, but Watt and Highsmith clearly outplayed them in Week 2.
The Steelers will need their two edge-rushers to continue wreaking havoc on opposing offenses, especially as long as their offense struggles. Pittsburgh heads to Las Vegas to face the Raiders (1-1) in Week 3.
