The reigning Sydney Marathon Champion Betsy Saina was on Friday night Inducted into the IOWA State Athletics Hall of Fame after her great success during her time at Iowa State University.
The 2012 African Games 10,000m bronze medallist spent five years at the at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where she earned her degree in agriculture and life sciences with a focus on nursing.
Saina took to her social media page to thank her family and friends who attended the Induction.
“Celebrating my hall Fame induction from last night, I appreciate my family and everyone who attended. Dreams are indeed valid. I love all the memories around the campus. It brought changes in my life and my entire family,” said Saina.
The 35 year-old who changed her nationality two years ago to represent United States, won last weekend the Sydney women Marathon also shared about her plans after her victory in Australia.
“It has been amazing enjoying my off days after @sydney_marathon but I can’t think of any other way to celebrate than such an amazing prestigious award. See you all soon in the road, two more week of fun before I head back to work to start my journey for Olympic trials, she posted.
The Induction Process
Former student-athletes can be nominated by either athletic department employees or members of the Letterwinners Club. A nominated committee is selected by the Letter winners Club executive committee who then selects members for induction. A varying number of members are inducted each year.
Each fall during Letter winners Weekend, the Iowa State Letter winners Club hosts the Iowa State University Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Inductees are honored at a Friday night banquet at which each honoree is presented a medallion and given the opportunity to speak and they are then honored at halftime of the football game the following day.
Opinion shapers predict that Saina will be one to watch at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in slated for February next year.
