Just five months ago, Jamie O’Hara was worried about Tottenham’s future Premier League status – but now fans may just start dreaming they might end up winning it.
The Sports Bar co-host isn’t the only one who doesn’t see why Spurs can’t be in the race, with manager Ange Postecoglo not ruling out a title push.
Rewind back to May and Spurs’ eighth place finish in the Premier League had left many of the club’s fans feeling concerned about the future.
After the failed reins of managers Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte, Spurs were then facing the prospect of losing all-time top goal scorer Harry Kane this summer.
“I seriously think we could be fighting relegation next season,” a despairing O’Hara said when asked about losing the club’s star striker’s potential departure.
But despite Kane moving on to Bayern Munich new manager Postecoglou has led Spurs to sit at the top of the Premier League table.
Tottenham beat Fulham 2-0 on Monday night to reclaim the top spot having been knocked off it by Manchester City over the weekend, with Heung-min Son and James Maddison scoring landmark goals to seal the win.
“Spurs are cruising to the title right now!” an excited O’Hara joked as he came on air on the Sports Bar after the victory.
However, Postecoglou hasn’t ruled out his side going all the way.
Monday’s win has seen the Australian secure the record for the best start to any manager’s Premier League career ever. His side also remain unbeaten this season.
Only eight sides in Premier League history have started a campaign with more than 23 points from their first nine games, with four of them going on to win the title, three ending second and one ending third.
Speaking to talkSPORT’s Sam Matterface after the game, Postecoglou was asked what his side’s targets are now for this season following their incredible start.
“Same as at the start of the year,” he responded. “We’re just going to try to be the best football team we can be, mate, and see where it takes us.”
But it was what Postecoglou said next that will have Spurs fans grinning from ear to ear.
When asked whether Spurs can win the title, he replied: “Unless there’s something in the rules to say Tottenham can’t, yeah, I think every team can.”
