Sign Toney and bring in Ramsdale – What every club needs to do at Christmas

Christmas can’t come at a better time for Premier League clubs with many in dire need of reinforcements.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney could be the biggest prize on offer, with the one-cap England international free to return to the pitch in January when his betting ban ends.

While the majority of teams are dreaming of a new centre-forward, some clubs are just hoping to get their players back from injury.

And certain fans of one side could be wishing for a change in manager in their desire to rise up the table.

talkSPORT host and ex-Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor has ran through what every club in the top-flight needs to do at Christmas.

Here’s what he had to say…

    Arsenal

“I think what Arsenal need for Christmas is a goalscoring striker.

“Some Arsenal fans say, ‘Oh it’s boring, we’ve got [Gabriel] Martinelli, [Bukayo] Saka, [Leandro] Trossard, [Eddie] Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus will all share the goals.’

“But what could they be doing? What could they get with another striker? What could they do with Ivan Toney in that team?

“How many goals would Arsenal score with Ivan Toney? These tight games they’re winning, with Toney in there, what could he do for that team?

“Can they sell [Emile] Smith Rowe? The academy graduate has his own song, but he’s not going to get in that team, let’s be honest. You’ve got good money sitting there with Smith Rowe.

“Sell Smith Rowe and use that money towards Ivan Toney. Go out and get him, because otherwise Chelsea or Spurs are going to get him and you’re going to regret it.”

    Aston Villa

“If I’m being greedy, I would say a right-back, but [Ezri] Konsa has done so well when [Matty] Cash has been out.

“Honestly, I look at Villa, and I don’t think we need anything. I feel Like Villa are spoilt.

“[Emiliano] Buendia will come back hopefully at some part of the season as well.

“Maybe if I’m being greedy, I’ll say another centre-back or right-back because [Tyrone] Mings is out, a right-back to rival Cash and Konsa can stay at centre-half.

“But Diego Carlos is doing so well, he’s pushed Konsa to right-back, honestly, Villa are blessed. Keep all the players fit, and Villa are fine.”

    Bournemouth

“I think Bournemouth are OK, they’ve picked up, they’ve got some very good players.

“They’re very good on the wings, they have wingers who can get past players with pace.

“[Dominic] Solanke is doing a good job up front, Kieffer Moore scored recently off the bench, I think Bournemouth are fine.”

    Brentford

“Brentford need to go out and get a striker, I feel Ivan Toney will leave.

“I think [Bryan] Mbuemo has had a little injury, [Yoane] Wissa is not on great form.

“So I will go out and get a No.10 and a striker.”

    Brighton

“They’re a good team Brighton, [Evan] Ferguson, Joao Pedro, [Danny] Welbeck, [Ansu] Fati…

“But they need to get Roberto De Zerbi signed up on a long-term contract, up his wages, whatever you need to do to get him to stay.

“I think Brighton are fine. They can be up and down, but any Brighton fan will never say a bad word about how they are playing.

“Brighton are fine across the pitch.”

    Burnley

“With Burnley, there’s always room for improvement, maybe more Premier League experience all around the pitch.

“They’ve got some very good young players, but not much Premier League experience.

“[Jay] Rodriguez and [Josh] Brownhill played in the Premier League, but I will go out and get two or three experienced players that aren’t going to play every game.

“But they are there to help these young lads come in and play in different games.”

    Chelsea

Chelsea have [Christopher] Nkunku and [Romeo] Lavia coming back, but Ivan Toney, go and get him, someone needs to go and get him.

“He wants to leave, he wants to play in the Champions League, Chelsea aren’t there at the moment, but they will be looking at that.

“He’s just going to make such a difference, Nicolas Jackson is an OK player, but he’s erratic, not a natural finisher and doesn’t control, dribble or shoot with Premier League quality.

“Ivan Toney will score so many goals in that team. Whoever gets Toney out of Chelsea and Arsenal have won Christmas for sure.”

Agbonlahor doesn't believe Jackson is good enough to lead Chelsea's line

    Crystal Palace

“I think it’s probably time to say goodbye to Roy [Hodgson].

“I look at Palace, and I feel like I could close my eyes and in ten years time they’d be 13th.

“They’re that sort of club that every season are not going to get a long cup run, not in the top seven for Europe, what is Palace?

“They need someone to come in there and get a better striker that’s clinical, a better No.10 so you can have [Eberechi] Eze on the left and [Michael] Olise on the right.

“But they need to change something there, and I think a younger manager can come in. Roy’s done a great job to settle the ship, but they need to make a change.”

    Everton

Everton need to keep players fit, I feel they are fine.

“Dwight McNeil has been outstanding, as has [Jack] Harrison, they’ve still got [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin, keeping him fit is big.

“Beto has been a bit off it when he’s played, but can you keep [James] Garner and [Amadou] Onana fit?

“Defensively, can you keep the two centre-halves fit? With teams like Everton, who are they going to get? Who’s available? How much money have they really got?”

    Fulham

“Fulham will be OK, maybe if they can find a striker, but it’s hard.

“We talk about what do clubs need, but where is the player that is going to come to Fulham?

“Where is the 15-20 goal-a-season striker that will come? It’s not going to happen.

“They’ve got some good players, [Alex] Iwobi is fit now and in form, Tom Cairney, you need to keep him fit because he’s in form.

“Can [Raul] Jimenez keep his injuries away? So I think just keeping players fit will be a good Christmas present for Fulham.”

    Liverpool

“I still think they need a clinical striker, I bet that [Darwin] Nunez doesn’t even finish his dinner at home!

“I bet his Christmas dinner is half left because he can’t finish it. The amount of times my group chat with two Liverpool fans are losing their minds at Nunez’s finishing…

“He’s got all the attributes: Pace, can run in behind, technique. But then on the one-on-ones, he doesn’t score. He will always do the wrong finish.

“So I would go out and get a proper finisher and I think that Liverpool will then be up there again.”

    Luton

“For me, Luton need to bring in some characters, some Premier League experience, they have [Ross] Barkley and [Andros] Townsend, two great signings.

“Can they get another cheeky one? Another centre-half who is experienced.

“Look at [Ben] Godfrey for instance who isn’t playing at Everton, or [Mason] Holgate. If you get these sort of players that have Premier League experience, then they’re going to help you.”

    Manchester City

“I feel like City have to say, ‘Kalvin Phillips you can go, here’s the price,’ and get money in.

“And they need to get a suitable sitter for Rodri, because if Rodri is injured or suspended… the team that played against Villa was insulting!

“[Pep Guardiola] played John Stones, who hasn’t played that much football recently, and Rico Lewis and Bernardo Silva. They got overrun.

“They need to get someone he can trust, he doesn’t trust Kalvin Phillips, [Matheus] Nunes – they paid a lot for him – and he doesn’t look like the real deal.

“[Mateo] Kovacic is someone that looks like he doesn’t fancy anymore, so they need a bit of a reshuffle in that midfield, because what if [Kevin] De Bruyne does come back?

“Hamstrings can come and go again, he’s getting a bit older now, his hamstring is going to keep playing up, but getting him back will be a great Christmas present.”

    Manchester United

“They need some help. If you look at their right-backs, [Diogo] Dalot and [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka are OK. Can they go out and get a real top right-back?

“Centre-half they’re doing OK, but I think that [Raphael] Varane will go to Saudi Arabia. [Lisandro] Martinez has injury problems.

“Can they get someone to go alongside Player of the Month for November – Mr Harry Maguire?

“Another central midfielder who is going to keep fit? And can they get [Mason] Mount, Casemiro and [Christian] Eriksen back?

“Once they do that, I feel like they will be up there as well.”

    Newcastle

“Another striker because of Callum Wilson‘s injury problems, [Alexander] Isak as well, both of them have had a few injuries.

“And can they have a bit of luck? Can they get some injured players back? [Sven] Botman, [Dan] Burn, [Harvey] Barnes, [Joe] Willock is an outstanding player.

“If they get all these players back, they will be flying even more.

“I would also go out and get [Aaron] Ramsdale, I don’t think it will happen, I think they’ve got to be clever and try and get a goalkeeper on loan.

David de Gea is on a free transfer, maybe that would work, but they definitely need a goalkeeper.”

    Nottingham Forest

“Santa has got to come to the training ground, sit all the players on his lap one by one, and say, ‘Can you put a performance in away from home? If you do, you’ll get a present.’

“They need some belief, some passion, they’ve got the players, they don’t need anymore.

“They’re got more players to field three training grounds rather than one, just a bit a of passion.”

    Sheffield United

“Sheffield United need a clinical striker, I do like [Cameron] Archer from Aston Villa who they signed, [Oliver] McBurnie as well.

“But they’ve not got anyone who is going to be ruthless in front of goal, they need someone like that.

“If they’re going to be a bit more defensive under Chris Wilder, can they have that striker who is going to score them ten goals between now and the end of the season, they then can win games 1-0.”

    Tottenham

Spurs are another one that needs to go out and get Ivan Toney, if I was Brentford I’d have an auction, I’d say, ‘Here’s the amount, going once, going twice…’

“Spurs need a striker, Richarlison might as well come sit next to me on a Monday night in my five-a-side, he’s not good enough, he’s not what Spurs need.

“Spurs have got in great signings, [Micky] Van de Ven, [James] Maddison, [Destiny] Udogie has come in from his [Udinese] loan, [Yves] Bissouma is playing better, get a striker!

“[Dejan] Kulusevski on the right, Son [Heung-min] on the left, a top striker like Toney with Maddison in behind, Spurs would be frightening!

“So definitely a striker for Spurs, nowhere else.”

    West Ham

West Ham need to get less bubbles because they’re not being blown so much at the moment!

“I think it’s time to get rid of [Michail] Antonio, if you get an offer I would ship him out, he’s not been good enough.

“[Said] Benrahma, I would get rid of him as well, I’d have a mini-sale at West Ham.

“They need another clinical striker, Danny Ings as well – not good enough. I’m quicker than Danny Ings now!

“They’ve got some great players, [Mohammed] Kudus is outstanding, [Jarrod] Bowen, [James] Ward-Prowse, [Tomas] Soucek, [Lucas] Paqueta, but they need to get a couple more of the level of those players.”

    Wolves

“Wolves I thought would go down, but they’ve done well. I do like Hwang Hee-Chan.

“What’s massive for Wolves for Christmas is, can they have [Pedro] Neto back? Because he’s outstanding.

“Get him back and they’ll be fine, maybe get another striker if [Maheus] Cunha is injured, because Fabio Silva, he wouldn’t make my Monday night team, I’m not even joking. He’s useless.”
