In what promises to be a really entertaining and nail-biting fixture, three-time Champions Australia U19 and reigning Champions India U19 are all set to lock horns against each other in the final of the U19 ODI World Cup, scheduled to take place tomorrow at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. The match is set to commence at 1:30 p.m. IST.
India, under the leadership of skipper Uday Saharan, has been undefeated since the commencement of their group-stage matches and has tasted success in all three games against Bangladesh, Ireland, and the USA, allowing them to finish first in their group-stage group. The team led by Uday Saharan easily defeated New Zealand and neighboring Asian country Nepal as they managed to finish first in Group 1 of the Super Six with eight points. Against the New Zealanders, the Indian team was in exceptional form, as they won by a massive 214-run margin.
The Indian team, nicknamed the Boys in Blue, won against Nepal by 132 runs in their final Super Six match of the tournament. The Indians scored 293 runs, and Nepal could not reach the target. Next, Uday Saharan and company played against South Africa, the hosts of the 2024 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, in the first semi-final, and the Indians emerged victorious over the junior South African team, thanks to excellent batting performances from in-form player Sachin Dhas (96 runs off 95 balls) and captain Uday Saharan (81 runs off 124 balls). The young Indian cricket team would aim to retain the Under-19 World Cup title by winning against Australia in the final match. A win would also allow the Indian U19 side to avenge the loss suffered by the senior Indian team against Australia in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Like India, Australia has also remained unbeaten in the 2024 Under-19 World Cup. The Boys in Yellow comfortably beat Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in the group stage matches. In the Super Six, captain Hugh Weibgen and his squad defeated Ashes rivals England by a massive 110 runs. Their second Super Six match against the West Indies was called off due to rain. If the rain had not intervened, the Australians likely would have beaten the West Indies, as they were looking in a pretty strong position to win. Against Pakistan, Weibgen and his players secured a nail-biting one-wicket victory in the second semi-final. The Australians would be looking to defeat India in the final and claim their fourth U19 World Cup title.
