Ben King to re-sign with Gold Coast Suns in huge win on eve of season

Ben King is set to lock away his future at the Gold Coast Suns.

According to SEN’s Sam Edmund, King is on the verge of re-signing with the club on a new two-year deal in a huge win for the Suns on the eve of the season.

A two-season extension would take King, 23, through to free agency in 2026.

It takes one of the biggest and most in-demand names off the market for 2024, with multiple Victorian clubs circling the Suns spearhead.

Those interested clubs have included Essendon and St Kilda, where King’s twin brother Max plays, however speculation has always been that the Sandringham Dragons product would rebuff rival offers and re-sign with the Suns, particular after coach Damien Hardwick’s appointment.

Edmund also reports Gold Coast had an offer on the table to King since last year, while his manager, Robbie D’Orazio from Connor Sports Management, was on the Gold Coast last week for meetings with the star forward and other clients.

King kicked 40 goals from 20 games last year in his return from an ACL injury after booting a personal best 47 majors in 2021. The former Pick 6 has 129 goals to his name from 73 AFL games since making his debut in 2019.

Asked earlier this month on 3AW if he was close to re-signing with the Suns, King said: “Yeah definitely.

“I’ve pretty much maintained what I’ve been saying my whole time up here at the Suns is that I love the footy club, I love the people here and I’m more confident than ever that, in football terms, we’re really heading in the right direction.”

King’s availability for Gold Coast’s Opening Round clash against Richmond on Saturday March 9 is up in the air due to knee swelling – a game that will be Hardwick’s first in charge of the Suns.
