Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’scharity foundation, Archewell, has encountered legal issues, with California’s attorney general ordering the organization to cease raising or spending money due to delinquency in registration fees.
The foundation’s failure to submit its annual report and registration fees has resulted in its listing as “delinquent” with the registry of charities and fundraisers, revealed Page Six. The foundation is now required to submit records explaining the delay in payment and pay late fees.
An official letter from Attorney General Rob Bonta states, “An organization that is listed as delinquent is not in good standing and is prohibited from engaging in conduct for which registration is required, including soliciting or disbursing charitable funds.”
Legal problems do not stop the Sussexes
Initially, sources indicated that Archewell had filed for an extension, but later it was discovered that a check sent with the filing had not been received. A new check has been issued, and the foundation should resume normal operations once the payment is processed.
The couple established Archewell after relocating to the US in March 2020, following their decision to step back from their senior royal duties. The foundation includes nonprofit charitable activities as well as for-profit business divisions focusing on media production, such as Archewell Audio and Archewell Productions.
Despite these legal troubles, Harry and Meghan announced an expansion of their foundation’s partnership with the GEANCO Foundation in Abuja, Nigeria. This expansion includes mental health resources and training for young men and women in addition to existing initiatives supporting girls and young women with menstrual health products and educational services.
Their successful tour of Nigeria
The announcement coincided with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’svisit to Nigeria, where they were greeted by enthusiastic crowds. Markle, who referred to Nigeria as her “motherland” after a DNA test revealed her Nigerian heritage, wore a cross necklace previously owned by Princess Diana, a gift from her husband.
A royal source commented, “It’s certainly been a very royal week for Harry and Meghan!” Despite the legal challenges, the couple remains active in their philanthropic endeavors, focusing on initiatives that promote mental health and education.
