Newcastle in advanced talks over Anthony Elanga swap deal with Nottingham Forest

Newcastle are in advanced talks with Nottingham Forest over a move for winger Anthony Elanga, talkSPORT understands.

The deal is likely to see Elliot Anderson move in the opposite direction to help both clubs’ PSR issues.

Elanga joined Forest from Manchester United last summer and enjoyed a good season at the City Ground, scoring five goals and bagging nine assists to help the club avoid relegation.

Anderson is a graduate of Newcastle’s youth academy, but has struggled to nail down a place in Eddie’s Howe’s starting XI.

With clubs under to meet Profit and Sustainability rules ahead of Sunday’s PSR deadline, talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook says that the deal could be mutually beneficial.

Speaking in The Warm Up, Crook said: “It’s one of these deals where it’s helping each other out in terms of PSR.

“This is a swap deal – or at least a player going in the opposite direction in terms of Elliot Anderson.

“Villa and Chelsea have done that, Everton have done it as well.

“It’s an interesting move for Elanga. He’s the type of player who Eddie Howe would love to coach and get the best out of because there is talent there, but we haven’t seen that to its full potential.

“If you’re Newcastle and two season ago you were finishing top four and qualifying for the Champions League and talking about all kinds of big signings, it isn’t exactly a sexy signing, is it?”

Suggestions earlier this summer stated that Newcastle were under pressure to sell players in order to comply with PSR, most notably with Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak among those linked with exits.

But according to Crook, it’s two other English players who are attracting interest.

Anthony Gordon raves about his England teammate Marc Guehi and says he would love him at Newcastle

He explained: “It’s almost like a mini-deadline day and more than many other clubs, Newcastle are up against it to try and move players on to avoid any points penalties.

“There’s interest in Callum Wilson from West Ham and Saudi Arabia, there’s also a bit of interest in Kieran Trippier.

AC Milan seem determined to sign a right back from the Premier League this summer -they were in for Matty Cash and now they’re in for Trippier.

“I don’t really see how that Trippier deal goes through between now and tomorrow – especially given that if he’s fit he’ll hopefully be featuring in England’s last-16 game at the Euros.”
