Thousands of Bayern fans sign petition to stop ‘horrible’ Man United transfer

Bayern Munich fans have started a petition to stop the sale of Matthijs de Ligt to Manchester United.

The Red Devils are looking to rebuild their back line following the departure of Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire’s possible exit and see De Ligt as a good option.

Earlier this week, talkSPORT reported the Bundesliga star has told his club he is ready to move on to a new challenge.

A transfer to Old Trafford would see him reunite with former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, who remains a huge admirer of his ex-captain.

But Bayern fans haven’t been impressed with the reports of his potential switch – so much so that they’ve made a petition to try to stop it.

At the time of writing, more than 14,000 people have signed it.

The description on the petition reads: “We all want Matthijs de Ligt to stay at FC Bayern Munich! He has proven that he‘s a world class defender, probably the best in our squad.

“There is a reason why he was elected as our best player in the 2022/23 season. Furthermore he is only 24 years old and has a bright future ahead, which he is going to use to fulfil his huge potential.

“Despite his young age, Mattha is already very mature and has a great mentality which will definitely make him a leading figure in defence and probably a competitor for captaincy in some years.

“His ability to speak English, German and Dutch fluently would help him a lot for that. With 19 years he already brought Ajax Amsterdam to the UCL semi finals as captain.

“Selling Matthijs de Ligt would be an absolutely horrible decision and we would definitely regret it. That‘s why we use our voice to call attention that we will NOT make this mistake!”

The 24-year-old has made 73 appearances for Bayern since he signed for the club from Juventus for £68million in 2022.

He’s also netted five goals and bagged two assists in that time.

The centre-back currently has three years left on his Bayern deal.

De Ligt made his breakthrough at Ajax as a 17-year-old back in 2016 and is currently out in Germany with Netherlands at Euro 2024.
