LaLiga giants interested in signing Conor Gallagher from Chelsea

Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Chelsea and England midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer, talkSPORT understands.

Gallagher has entered the final year of his contract at Chelsea and there have been no plans to negotiate a new deal.

It has left the England international’s future in doubt with the midfielder long being linked with a move away.

Gallagher is said to be relaxed about his future, however.

Atletico are desperate to bolster their numbers with five players leaving this summer already, four of which were free transfers.

As an academy player, selling Gallagher would be a major boost to Chelsea adhering to PSR rules as he would represent a ‘pure profit’ sale.

However, the 24-year-old has been a key player at Stamford Bridge and was the club’s de facto captain last season with first-choice skipper Reece James and second-choice Ben Chiwell unavailable for a significant portion of the campaign.

That was under Mauricio Pochettino, though, and new coach Enzo Maresca has not had a chance to get a close look at Gallagher with him currently with England at Euro 2024.

Tottenham and Aston Villa have been linked with the Englishman, though they might have already signed players in his position.

Spurs forked out £40million for Archie Gray last week while Aston Villa snapped up Ross Barkley from Luton Town.

Gallagher is a fan favourite at Chelsea and club legend Joe Cole has previously insisted that they cannot let him go.

The former England international told talkSPORT last month: “Gallagher can’t leave. I know there are issues financially but Conor Gallagher has been brilliant, from start to finish.

“Everyone has turned up in the last few weeks but Conor, you see a great player when he is playing in a struggling team. Conor was still there, captain as well.

“I think it is imperative that the club keeps him.”

The midfielder missed only one match in the Premier League last season through suspension and has scored seven and assisted nine in all competitions.
