Mason Greenwood has given his approval to joining Marseille this summer as his exit from Manchester United inches closer.
The French side had a bid worth £26.7m accepted for Greenwood, while also agreeing to give United a significant share of any future sale – reported to be 50% – earlier this month.
Despite pressure from Lazio, whose president has been public with his desire to sign Greenwood this summer, The Athletic claim the 22-year-old has given verbal approvement to joining Marseille.
Work continues to finalise the deal, with Greenwood also needing to undergo a medical before any move can be made official.
The mayor of Marseille had urged the Ligue 1 side to withdraw from negotiations over Greenwood’s prior allegations of attempted rape, assault and coercive control, which were dropped in February 2023.
Should Marseille complete a deal for Greenwood, they will have successfully fought off competition from a number of Serie A sides. Lazio president Claudio Lotito claimed both Napoli and Juventus had tried to hijack proceedings.
United are keen to part ways with Greenwood and reports claimed they initially valued the one-cap England international at £40m, but the significant sell-on clause in their agreement with Marseille should ensure they reach that figure eventually.
Raising funds is key to United’s summer transfer plans, with new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe challenging the club to sell close to £100m-worth of players to finance a shopping spree.
Following the signing of Joshua Zirkzee, United are looking to complete a move for Bayern Munich centre-back Matthijs de Ligt and have also had a bid accepted for Lille’s Leny Yoro, who is yet to give his approval to a move amid interest from Real Madrid.
