Analyst links 49ers’ Brock Purdy with historic contract extension

It was suggested this spring that quarterback Brock Purdy could eventually sign a contract extension similar to the five-year deal reportedly worth up to $255M with $179.3M guaranteed that Jalen Hurts received from the Philadelphia Eagles in the spring of 2023.

Purdy’s price tag may have already skyrocketed even though he hasn’t played a meaningful down since February.

“If he continues this level of play, my best estimate is that a Purdy deal would come in around five years and $325M, for an average of $65M per season,” Bill Barnwell of ESPN wrote. “It’s always possible the quarterback could take some semblance of a reduced salary to try to make life easier for his team, but after making just $2.6M over the first three years of his existing deal, I’m not sure why he would be willing to cut the 49ers any slack.”

In June, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence put pen to paper on a five-year contract extension worth up to $275M with $142M fully guaranteed at signing. It seems to be a matter of when, not if, Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers and Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins will reset the market for young quarterbacks via newly signed deals.

On Wednesday, Dianna Russini of The Athletic noted that the “Dallas Cowboys are working hard to get” an agreement done with Dak Prescott that will likely make Prescott “the first quarterback to break the $60M-per-year barrier.”

Unlike all of those previously-mentioned signal-callers, Purdy started back-to-back conference championship games in his first two pro campaigns before he became a finalist for the Most Valuable Player Award en route to guiding the 49ers to Super Bowl LVIII. He then came to within a fourth-and-one defensive stop of defeating Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes on the sport’s biggest stage.

As Barnwell mentioned, there’s no fifth-year option attached to Purdy’s rookie contract since he was the final pick of the 2022 draft and not a first-round selection. The 24-year-old will be eligible to sign an extension following the upcoming season, and getting a deal done quickly ultimately could save a 49ers team that’s already facing difficult salary-cap-related decisions some money down the road.

Mike Fisher of Athlon Sports reported on Tuesday that “one NFL source tells CowboysCountry.com that with ‘patience,’ Prescott’s value will hit $70M annually.” Assuming that’s correct, Purdy could ink a deal worth closer to an average of $75M per season by September 2025.
