Macklemore cancels scheduled October concert in Dubai to protest against UAE's Role in Sudan War

Rapper Macklemore made a significant statement on Saturday by canceling his scheduled October concert in Dubai, citing concerns over the United Arab Emirates’ involvement in the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The artist, well-known for his activism, explained that the decision was rooted in his commitment to “stand up for the most marginalized around the world.”

In his announcement, Macklemore shared that his choice was the result of “numerous conversations with trusted organizers and friends, as well as thorough research.” He also encouraged his followers to read his full statement, which outlines the reasons behind his decision and his stance on the issue.

“The crisis in Sudan is catastrophic, over ten million people have been displaced, millions face imminent famine [and] sexual violence is widespread,” Macklemore wrote.

“While numerous external forces contribute to this crisis, advocates, organizers, journalists, and officials repeatedly highlight the UAE’s role in funding the RSF militia as a major factor.

“The plight of the Palestinian people has woken the world up. We have seen people around the globe protesting in the millions, college encampments and widespread information through social media that has not only documented the last 10 months of genocide, but the last 76 years of ethic cleansing and occupation in Palestine.”

    Conflict in Sudan

The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has been marked by a violent power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The violence, which started in the capital, has spread throughout the country, resulting in significant loss of life and devastation. Reports from the International Rescue Committee indicate that at least 15,500 people have died, though some estimates suggest the number could be as high as 150,000.
