Man United fans want club legend to ‘replace Casemiro’ after impressive game

Manchester United fans joked they wanted Michael Carrick to replace Casemiro in midfield after his silky performance against Celtic.

The former Red Devils player and coach returned to Old Trafford on Saturday to play in the club’s legends game with the Scottish giants.

Former captain Wayne Rooney stole headlines after rolling back the years to net a glorious free kick.

Fans also picked up on another impressive performance from another of Man United’s legends, though – and they want him back playing for them.

Carrick retired in 2018 and has since gone into management, first becoming Man United assistant before moving on to his current role as Middlesbrough boss.

But if his performance on Saturday is anything to go off though, the 43-year-old certainly still has what it takes to put a decent shift in in midfield.

And Man United supporters were that wowed by his passes and movement that they want him to replace Casemiro.

One fan wrote on X: “Terminate Casemiro’s contract asap and bring Carrick as player/manager.”

“Michael Carrick could get on the pitch for us and still put in a better performance than Casemiro,” a second said.

A third said: “one year contract for carrick to replace casemiro, who says no?”

Casemiro has struggled so far this season for the Red Devils, being largely at fault for two of Liverpool’s goals in his side’s 3-0 loss last weekend.

He was hooked at half time by Erik ten Hag, with ex-Liverpool star Jamie Carragher saying the Brazilian to ‘leave the football before the football leaves him’ in his post-match analysis.

A number of Man United fans maintain that the club never brought in another player as good as Carrick since his retirement, either.

“Man United still haven’t replaced him,” one wrote on X.

Carrick, who joined Man United under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2006, won numerous honours in his 464 games for the club.

He was part of the sides that won the Premier League in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013.

He also lifted the Champions League in 2008, the League Cup in 2009, 2010 and 2017, the FA Cup in 2016 and the Europa League in 2017.
