Former England National Cricket Team all-rounder Moeen Ali is all set to embark on a new journey after ending his international career. As per the reports in the Telegraph, it is learned that the former skipper of the national team is set to be fast-tracked by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in the coaching role.
England and Wales Cricket Board will be offering Moeen Ali opportunities with the national pathway programme. The all-rounder reportedly wants to focus on his life but the governing body is eager to use him to help nurture the next generation of players. They believe his high all-round skills will be of great use to the young players.
Moeen as per the reports was all set to be the coaching consultant for the England U19 team during the tri-series against Ireland and Scotland, which begins on Thursday. However, things didn’t work out as the all-rounder got the offer to play in the Caribbean Premier League. The ECB is in discussions with the all-rounder and it is learned the board values his leadership skills very highly.
England and Wales Cricket Board is keeping an eye on the schedule of Moeen, who recently signed an offer to join Guyana Amazon Warriors. They are looking for a window where the all-rounder can be free and they can use his expertise within the pathway programme, working with England Under-19s or England Lions.
Coaching is something I want to do – Moeen Ali
After Moeen Ali announced his retirement from international cricket, the all-rounder expressed his desire to coach the team. He stated that he wants to learn from Brendon McCullum and stated:
“Coaching is something I want to do – I want to be one of the best. I can learn a lot from Baz [Brendon McCullum]. I hope people remember me as a free spirit. I played some nice shots and some bad shots, but hopefully, people enjoyed watching me.”
The decision to fast-track former players into the England team setup is all the idea of England’s managing director Rob Key. Earlier this year in the match, the head of the governing body also had a hit about the all-rounder getting involved in the coaching setup. He had said: “Moeen Ali I think will be an excellent coach”.
England of late has been involving former players in the Test setup. James Anderson, who retired from Test cricket in July, immediately moved into a job as fast-bowling coach for the side. He will also be part of the series against Pakistan and New Zealand.
Andrew Flintoff also was involved in the coaching setup. He worked as a consultant with the England Under-19s and with the full national side before his appointment last week as the new head coach of England Lions.
Also, Graeme Swann and Ian Bell have also been involved with coaching the England Lions this year. It remains to be seen what will be the future of Moeen Ali in the England team coaching setup.
