42-year-old OT rejoins Seahawks for 21st NFL season

Future Hall of Fame offensive tackle Jason Peters continues to defy Father Time.

The 42-year-old is rejoining the Seattle Seahawks for his 21st NFL season.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero first reported on Tuesday afternoon that Peters was signing with the Seahawks practice squad, and his agency later confirmed the news.

While first-time Pro Football Hall of Fame nominee Eli Manning joins holdover candidates like running back Steven Jackson, defensive end Jared Allen, nose tackle Vince Wilfork and defensive back DeAngelo Hall on the Class of 2025 ballot, other Class of 2004 draftees mentioned by Pelissero won’t be eligible until later.

Wideout Larry Fitzgerald and quarterback Phillip Rivers are the first to make the ballot for the 2026 class, while signal-caller Ben Roethlisberger will be up for induction in 2027.

Peters, meanwhile, is still trucking and will not be eligible for enshrinement until at least 2030, assuming he plays this season and then finally retires.

The two-time first-team All-Pro has suited up for five teams across his 20 seasons.

When Tom Brady announced his second retirement on Feb. 1, 2023, Peters earned the distinction of being the league’s oldest player.

According to a report by Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic, if Peters takes the field for a game with Seattle this season, he’ll be the second-oldest offensive lineman to make an appearance since at least 1950, per Stathead. Washington’s Ray Brown holds that record at 43 years and 20 days old. Additionally, Peters is now older than 11 NFL head coaches, including his own, Mike Macdonald, who is 37.

After opening his career with five seasons with the Buffalo Bills from 2004-08, the Arkansas product had his most successful days over a 12-year stay with the Philadelphia Eagles. Peters made seven straight Pro Bowls with the Eagles from 2009-2016, with the streak only interrupted by a ruptured Achilles tendon that forced him to miss the entire 2012 campaign.

He spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys before joining the Seahawks in September 2023. Peters played only 217 regular-season snaps last year but was called for just two penalties across his eight games.

He’s fourth among active players in both games played (248) and games started (221) and could gain ground on those ahead of him if he is promoted to the active roster this fall.
