Manchester United players have chosen their preferred next head coach

Manchester United players have reportedly already made their pick for a potential new head coach as questions swirl around Erik ten Hag‘s future. Following a string of poor performances, capped by a 3-0 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur, rumors are circulating that the United dressing room is growing increasingly discontented with the current boss’ leadership.

United’s season started on a positive note with a win over Fulham, but since then, they have gone three matches without a victory, slipping down to 13th place in the Premier League standings.

Although the club made some big summer signings such as Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt, the results haven’t reflected the investment.

According to a report by the Daily Star, the Manchester United board is planning to reevaluate the situation during the upcoming autumn international break.

Despite leading the team to an FA Cup win over Manchester City in May, Ten Hag’s position has been under scrutiny throughout the summer, with rumors that United has approached several potential replacements.

Although Ten Hag signed a contract extension that ties him to the club until 2026, it’s uncertain whether he will see it through amid the ongoing challenges and speculation.

    Who could succeed Ten Hag?

If Ten Hag were to depart, reports suggest that United’s players are in favor of an internal promotion, with assistant coach and former club star Ruud Van Nistelrooy as their top choice.

A fan-favorite, Van Nistelrooy scored 150 goals in 219 games for United under Sir Alex Ferguson. After his playing career ended in 2012, the Dutchman moved into coaching, starting with Jong PSV before managing PSV‘s first team, where he won the 2022/23 KNVB Cup and guided the team to regular European competitions.

Other coaches linked with a possible role at United include Inter’s Simone Inzaghi, who is among the favorites, and former England boss Gareth Southgate, who is in the mix after stepping down from his national team role following a narrow defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
