Methodist Shutsout Meredith at Home, 3-0 – Methodist University Athletics

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University women’s soccer shrugs off its weekend loss by returning to Duggins Soccer Stadium on Tuesday night and produced a statement victory, 3-0, against the visiting Avenging Angels of Meredith College, in another match between two USA South schools.

    JUST THE FACTS

Final score: Methodist def. Meredith, 3–0

    Records: Methodist 4-5-0 (3-1-0 USA South), Meredith 6-4-3 (2-2-1)

Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

    HOW IT HAPPENED

    • It only took the Monarchs nine minutes to claim a 1-0 lead as senior Kelsey Burge scored her second goal of the season. With the ball passed upfield, Burge and the Avenging Angel defender challenged each other for control. Gaining possession was Burge, who then took a few more steps before firing a shot into the bottom right corner of the net.
    • During the first 20 minutes of the second half, Meredith generated numerous shots in an attempt to tie the score, but Methodist goalie Carolina Simpkins, a junior, was able to fend off each attempt.
    • In the 71st minute, senior Corrine Shovlain doubled the Monarch’s goal total. A foul by the Avenging Angels awarded a free kick to Methodist, and Shovlain was tasked with taking the kick. She opted for a direct kick on goal and scored from 19 yards out as her shot traveled over the outstretched arm of Meredith’s goalie.
    • Eleven minutes later, freshman Mackenzie Meekins added the finishing touches by scoring the Monarch’s third goal. After moving the ball into the box, Meekins ripped her initial shot, which was saved but not secured by the Avenging Angel’s goalie. The ball bounced back to Meekins, who rocketed a second shot that would find the top left corner of the net.

    NUMBERS

    • For Meekins, that was the first goal of her young collegiate career.
    • Each team registered 16 shots apiece, but Methodist still held a nine-to-four edge in shots on target.
    • Keeping a clean sheet for the third time this season, Simpkins finished the match with four saves.
    • The three goals by the Monarchs tonight were the most scored against the Meredith since 2007.
