Monarchs Secure 1–0 Win on Senior Day – Methodist University Athletics

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Honoring its 12–member senior class on Saturday, the Methodist women’s soccer team managed to break a 0–0 tie with a late score against Mary Baldwin University. The Monarchs preserved their shutout, holding on for a one­–goal victory over the Fighting Squirrels.

The 12 seniors recognized on Saturday included No. 2 Leslie Reyes, No. 3 Charly Oldham, No. 4 Amanda DeDomenico, No. 6 Emma Pedraza, No. 12 Kelsey Burge, No. 15 Corrine Shovlain, No. 18 C’nya Stevens, No. 19 Quierra Hawkins, No. 21 Alexis Lemons, No. 27 Maddy Ostrowski, No. 28 Jada Zimmerman, and No. 29 Shayle Green.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither team had many offensive opportunities in the first half. The Monarchs didn’t put a single shot on goal, while Carolina Simpkins saved both shots that were on target for Mary Baldwin.
  • Scoreless play continued long into the second half. Gizelle Garcia put the first two shots on goal for Methodist in the 49th and 52nd minutes, both of which were handled by the opposing goalkeeper, Maddy Vinson.
  • 12 minutes into the second half, senior Quierra Hawkins attempted a shot against her former team that also had to be saved.
  • With under five minutes to play, Mary Herndon lofted a pass into the box that Lola Campbell was able to direct towards the net. Vinson got a fingertip on the ball, but it still bounced off the left post and in for a goal.

NUMBERS

  • Methodist remains undefeated against Mary Baldwin, improving its all–time record against the Fighting Squirrels to 17–0.
  • Campbell’s goal marks the second of her collegiate career, coming just three days after she scored for the first time in the win over Pfeiffer University.  

UP NEXT
The Monarchs face a tough test on Tuesday when they travel to Newport News, Virginia for a match against Christopher Newport University at 5 p.m. The Captains are currently ranked No. 3 nationally, according to the United Soccer Coaches poll.
