After what seemed like an eternity, we are now less than a week away from an improbably boxing match. Mike Tyson, the legendary fighter dubbed “the Baddest Man on the Planet“, will be facing off against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.
Tyson went through a mini health scare, an ulcer flare-up to be exact, during the summer that forced the fight to be moved off of its initial July 20 date. Although some remain skeptical to this day that the fight will actually happen, everything is going forward as it nears. Paul is training hard, and Tyson looks to be in great shape as he wraps up camp.
Supporters of Tyson are slightly worried about how the 58-year-old will handle the physical workload, and the aftermath that will come from it. But they can rest assured as his coach, Rafael Cordeiro, has given everyone positive news about his current status.
Mike is much better than he was when he fought Roy [Jones Jr.]. Four years later, at 58, he’s better than he was at 54. He saw everything right and wrong that he did and fixed it. This is the beauty of the fight. His energy is good… We’re in the perfect time and perfect place. Mike put everything together, mentally and physically. We’re very excited.
Mike Tyson could have advantage with shorter fight and rounds
Cordeiro mentioned it during a documentary series called MVP Uncut. Tyson’s fight against Roy Jones Jr. was Iron Mike’s last time in a boxing ring. It was an exhibition match which was ruled a draw. That fight was eight rounds.
The fight between Tyson and Paul will be eight rounds as well, although it has been sanctioned as a professional bout. The rounds will be two minutes instead of the usual three. Those changes should benefit the older Tyson.
