ATLANTA, Ga.  Competing in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, the Methodist women’s soccer team saw its season come to a close with a 6–0 loss against host team Emory University on Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs conceded three goals in each half, while attempting zero shots.

    JUST THE FACTS

Final score: Emory def. Methodist, 6–0

    Records: Methodist 11-8-0, Emory 12-3-3

Location: Woodruff PE Center; Atlanta, Georgia

    HOW IT HAPPENED

    • The Methodist defense saw plenty of action in the first 15 minutes of play as Emory took nine shots — four that were blocked by defenders and three that were saved by goalkeeper Carolina Simpkins. In the 17th minute, Simpkins came off her line to play a ball that was crossed into the box from the left side of the field. Unable to bring the ball in, Simpkins sprung back to her feet and retreated towards the net, but there wasn’t enough time to get set for the oncoming shot, which whizzed by on her right side for the first goal of the game.
    • Emory’s second score came in the 25th minute, as Mikayla Camp lofted a ball in from the top left corner of the box that sailed out of Simpkins’ reach but inside the frame. Just two minutes later, Emory extended its lead with a third goal that was initiated off a corner kick.
    • Simpkins recorded six straight saves to start the second half before allowing a score in the 71st minute of play.
    • Kaylea Carter played the final 10 and a half minutes in goal for the Monarchs, conceding two goals, including one off a penalty kick.

    NUMBERS

    • Carolina Simpkins finished the day with 12 saves, averaging three saves per goal allowed.
    • The Eagles earned 13 corner kicks, leading to plenty of offensive looks. Six different players scored for Emory.
