Kishane Thompson to make indoor debut in Astana – AW

The Olympic 100m silver medallist has only ever competed outdoors in his career so far

Kishane Thompson will make his indoor debut later this month at the Astana Indoor Meet in Kazakhstan (January 25).

It will be the first World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meet of the season, with the other events being in Belgrade, Boston, Ostrava, Karlsruhe, New York, Liévin, Toruń and Madrid.

Thompson, who secured the Olympic 100m silver medal in Paris last summer, has only ever compered outdoors in his career so far.

The 23-year-old has got a 60m personal best of 6.67 – set at the Jubilee Series in Jamaica two years ago – but that was in an outdoor setting.

Thompson is viewed as one of the most exciting sprinters on the planet and missed out on becoming Olympic 100m champion by just five-thousandths of a second at the Stade de France.

Noah Lyles took the victory but the pair both clocked 9.79 in the French capital.

Thompson clocked the fastest time in the world last season – he recorded a mark of 9.77 in his victory at the  Jamaican Olympic Trials – and he is now joint-ninth on the 10om all-time list.

The only men to have gone quicker than him over the distance are: Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell, Justin Gatlin, Christian Coleman, Trayvon Bromell and Fred Kerley.

Thompson hasn’t competed since the Olympics so it will be fascinating to see how his winter training has gone and what kind of shape he is in for the 2025 season.

His main competition in Astana will come from Andre De Grasse, who became Olympic 200m champion in Tokyo and was part of the Canadian 4x100m team that struck gold in Paris.

A myriad of other Jamaicans will be competing in Kazakhstan, ranging from Tia and Tina Clayton to Natasha Morrison and Janieve Russell.
