The Dallas Cowboys are in the market for a new head coach with news that Mike McCarthy and the team couldn’t agree on a new contract.
All signs pointed to the two sides agreeing on a new contract after owner Jerry Jones put his support behind the Super Bowl-winning coach in recent weeks.
However with McCarthy’s deal set to expire on Tuesday, reports state that the head coach and Jones couldn’t agree on a length of a new contract.

As a result McCarthy will move on and pursue other opportunities, with several teams expected to make a push to land him, while the Cowboys will now being their search for a new head coach.
Dallas had rejected a request from the Chicago Bears last week to interview McCarthy for their vacant head coaching position as they were hopeful of reaching a deal. However, with McCarthy no longer a member of the Cowboys, he is expected to speak with the Bears in the coming days.
The New Orleans Saints are another potential landing spot for the 61-year-old who went 49-35 in five seasons with Dallas. Despite the regular season success, he failed to lead the Cowboys to the NFC Championship game during his tenure.
The Cowboys failed to make the playoffs this season as injuries derailed their campaign. Star quarterback Dak Prescott was listed to just eight games after suffering a season-ending hamstring injury.
McCarthy still confident in his abilities
Prior to his time in Dallas, McCarthy coached the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018. He finished his tenure with the team with a record of 125-77, along with winning Super Bowl XLV over the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2020.
Last week McCarthy was asked why he believes he should remain the head coach of the Cowboys, and he made his case clear.
“I don’t like to talk about myself that way, but I’ll just be clear: I’m a winner,” he told reporters.
“I know how to win. I’ve won a championship. I won a championship in this building. And that’s who I am. We’ll see where it goes.
